There’s something about the places we call home – they don’t just surround us; they get inside of us. And even when we leave them, they travel with us.

Pittsburgh is very much a part of me. Looking closely, I've noticed many residents of my hometown who share my attachment to the city. We’ve got Pittsburgh under our skin, literally. A tattooed symbol is one way of representing a lasting connection to place. Pittsburgh tattoos seem to be quite common, yet each person chooses a different symbol to represent their particular connection to "the 'burgh." Under My Skin is an in-progress book project that documents Pittsburgh related tattoos and collects stories about the significance of place in people’s lives.

In the future, the focus of the project could expand to include places, people and tattoos outside Pittsburgh. If you have a tattoo that relates to your home or another place that holds a special significance in your life, get in touch!
